When I see people who feel they have to learn a language, for work or for a test, somehow they have trouble. They run into a wall. They stagnate. They just seem unable to achieve the kind of fluency they need.

When I see people who enjoy the language, they do better. They do not even have to have the chance to speak. Often people who have lots of chance to speak do not improve. Immigrants are a prime example. On the other hand, people who enjoy listening and reading, who enjoy exploring the language, the history, the culture and the romance of the language, those people do well, no matter where they live.
