Monolingual intellectual elites of the English speaking world.

The following is a quote from Jacques Barzun’s book “From Dawn to Decadence, 500 Years of Western Cultural Life“, which I have just started reading.

“It is a noteworthy feature of 20C culture that for the first time in over a thousand years its educated class is not expected to be at least bilingual”.

I think this is true of English speaking societies, but not necessarily of other societies in the world today.
